Volvo Penta begins production of an e-drive line for the world’s first serial electric fire truck

Volvo Penta 5.0 has begun producing bespoke electric drive lines for Rosen Bauer’s leading fire truck, known as “Revolutionary Technology” (RT).

Taking on demonstrated innovation from Volvo trucks and Volvo transports, Volvo Penta and its client Rosen Bauer have presented the world’s first electric fire engine, with a totally new vehicle engineering. RT pushes Volvo Penta’s electric drive lines to new heights. Unlike other Volvo Group EVs with two or sometimes three electric machines, the RT needs four to do its job. All four electric devices must run simultaneously for two propulsion to provide additional battery power for a range extender and an electric power take-off if firefighters, for example, rotate the foam pump. Due to the required compact dimensions of the City Fire Truck, Volvo Penta built a new Active Cooling Unit (ACU). This component was developed in partial collaboration with Rosen Bauer. Because of the necessary minimal elements of the City Fire Truck, Volvo Penta constructed another Active Cooling Unit (ACU). This part was created in fractional cooperation with Rosen Bauer. The new ACU draws on a 600V framework — rather than the standard 24V — this additional force permits the Volvo Penta to cool batteries and the capacity to cool the Rosen Bauer vehicle.

Three Rosen Bauer test fire trucks — powered by Volvo Penta electric drive lines — have already successfully reached Berlin, Amsterdam, and Dubai. So far, staff has been amazed at the RT’s battery capacity and many other benefits of not having a large diesel engine — such as increased staff cabin space and more side panel storage.

The principal electric drive lines have now entered creation at Sweden’s Volvo Penta vara plant. Here the ACU is fabricated, and the framework is cut — stacked with programming and bundled together — to make the establishment as direct as workable for the client.
